North Carolina A&T State University invites you to its Spring 2024 Commencement. Dr. Stephanie G. Adams, Dean of the School of Engineering and Computer Science at University of Texas Dallas will be the keynote speaker for the Graduate College Ceremony on Friday, May 10, at 9am in the Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts, 300 N. Historic Preservation Workshop (END MAY 11)

GSO HRD Toiletry Drive For Local Refugees (END MAY 31)

The City of Greensboro’s Human Rights Department is sponsoring an essential toiletries drive to benefit local refugees. The drive will run through May 31st. Items needed include: baby powder and wipes, bar soap, conditioner, deodorant, diapers and diaper cream, dish soap and sponges, feminine hygiene products, hand sanitizer, powdered laundry soap, petroleum jelly, shampoo, skin lotion, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. ABIS Champions & Legends Fundraising Weekend (END MAY 31)

Advancement of Blacks In Sports (ABIS), the voice of racial equity in sports, will hold its third annual Champions & Legends Fundraising Weekend from May 31 – June 2 in Maryland. The event aims to recognize and celebrate outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of Blacks in the sports industry. Proceeds will directly fund ABIS’s programs and initiatives, including its financial coaching program, which ensures that Black student-athletes have the essential skills for financial well-being during and after their college careers. Greensboro Fire Dept Hydrant Testing (END MAY 31)

The Greensboro Fire Department will conduct their annual fire hydrant testing through May 31. Opening hydrants can sometimes cause a temporary discoloration of water in nearby homes. The discoloration is not harmful in any way and can be cleared up by running the water for a few minutes. If you observe a hydrant that is out of service or experiencing problems, please contact the City of Greensboro Water Department at (336) 373-2033.

Trolley Hopper Extended Through June (Disc. JUN 01)

Originally scheduled to conclude, the free downtown Hopper Trolley service will be extended through June 2024. The Hopper Trolley runs Thursdays through Saturdays from noon until midnight and Sundays from noon until 10 pm. The route is centered along the Elm Street corridor, with an arrival frequency averaging between 5-7 minutes. See a route map and a live trolley tracker at greensboro-nc.gov/hopper.

GSO HRC MLK Memorial Breakfast Committee Applications (END JUN 15)

The City of Greensboro’s Human Rights Commission has revamped aspects of the committee that shape the group’s annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Breakfast. GPD Non-emergency Reporting Tool (END JUN 15)

The Greensboro Police Department has introduced a new tool that will help free up more officers to respond to emergency calls, while also allowing city residents an easy way to file their own reports online 24/7 about certain non-emergency incidents and concerns. Take The GoBORO Survey (END JUN 30)

The City of Greensboro seeks residents’ opinions about a proposed expansion of its bus system, the Greensboro Transit Agency. As part of GoBORO, the City’s long-range transit planning process, planners are asking residents to review a Draft Bus Network and take an online survey. The deadline to participate is June 30. GuilfordWorks Assisting Those Impacted By Recent Layoffs

GuilfordWorks is prepared to support those individuals impacted by a recent layoff in the Community. The NCWorks Career Centers in Guilford and Forsyth counties can provide career and job placement services to those impacted by unemployment or underemployment. Medicaid/CHIP Renewal

People enrolled in Medicaid or CHIP should update their contact information and check the mail for a renewal form from their Medicaid agency over the next few months. It is important to complete the renewal form and return it immediately to avoid a loss of coverage, including parents who may be renewing coverage for their children. People who have lost Medicaid or CHIP should visit HealthCare.gov to see if they are eligible to enroll in a low-cost, quality health plan.

NCBA Senior Community Service Employment Program

Recognizing that income and productivity are key to maintaining the quality of life our seniors deserve, the National Caucus & Center on Black Aging proudly provides employment training and placement services under the Senior Community Service Employment Program.  In order to qualify, you must be 55 or older, unemployed, capable of performing part-time training duties, and have a family income that does not exceed 125% of the federal poverty income guidelines. Free Computer Classes at the Library

Free computer classes are back at the Greensboro Public Library. Classes at the Central Library are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Several branch locations offer classes as well. Take Me Home

The Greensboro Police Department will be participating in the “Take Me Home” program. “Take Me Home” is a free program that allows family members and legal guardians to upload critical information for individuals with a cognitive impairment or developmental disability in the event that a registered individual encounters law enforcement or is reported missing. Guilford County Schools

Guilford County School’s youth crisis hotline, 336-332-7295, is currently open to students dealing with anxiety, depression, abuse, suicidal thoughts, hunger, or any other form of crisis. For emergency, you should still call 911. Additionally, the GCS general information line, 336-332-7290, can be used Monday through Friday from 8 am – 7 pm.

TRIAD Goodwill Accepts Food Donations

A lot of people don’t know this, but Triad Goodwill accepts food donations and routes them to local food banks. Non-perishable food items are collected in all 23 Donation Centers located in Guilford, Alamance, Randolph, Rockingham and Caswell counties. Styrofoam Recycling

While foam and Styrofoam aren’t recyclable in Greensboro’s recycling program, residents and businesses that want to recycle foam may now bring it to 1310 W. Gate City Blvd. Foam dropped off at this location will be made into picture frames and molding in New Jersey. Proceeds from the sale of foam will go back to support Tiny House Community Development’s efforts to reduce homelessness in the Triad. For more info, call 919-622-3303.

Glass Recycling

The City of Greensboro is no longer accepting glass, large plastic items, pots and pans, and shredded paper in its recycling program. Visit greensboro-nc.gov/recycle for locations you can recycle glass going forward.

Library Makerspace
